The Ag. President Prof Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, August 14, directed the Inspector General of Police to, with immediate effect, overhaul the management and activities of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
This is coming more than a year protestants took to some streets to demand for a total scrapping of the police unit over alleged extortion, detention, extra-judicial killings and harassment of innocent citizens as well as other unlawful manners in which the operatives carry out their duties.
The acting president, however, in a press release made available to newsmen, said that the unit needs to be improved following “persistents complaints and reports on the activities of SARS that bothers on the allegation of human right violations.”
The report further stated on the need for operatives in the emerging units to bear identification whenever they are on duty and always carry out their operations in adherence to the rule of law and due regards to human rights.
